Kiwanis Golden K expands partnership with Meals on Wheels by adopting a route
Commitment to volunteering is in addition to $1000 donation to the program
Are you (or a loved one) recovering from a recent hospital stay? Is grocery shopping or meal preparation increasingly difficult? Do you worry that your loved one is not eating properly? We can help
No referral process. No age restriction. No income restriction. Delivered by our team of trusted volunteers.
Rather than a fixed price per meal, clients are charged a subsidized rate based on annual household income.
All meals are cardiac-friendly and diabetic-friendly, overseen by a Registered Dietician, and prepared in a licensed kitchen.
Healthy eating promotes not only physical health but general wellbeing. It reduces the risk for chronic diseases at older ages, and leads to increased autonomy.
Meals are delivered Monday to Thursday by a team of trustworthy volunteers, who also provide regular social contact and a friendly face.
Delivery Area: Sydney, Membertou, Sydney River, Westmount, Coxheath, Ashby, Whitney Pier.

Meals on Wheels is working to meet each client where they are financially, while creating a sustainable business model for the future. Rather than a fixed price per meal, clients are charged a subsidized rate based on annual household income.
Individuals whose annual household income is less than $50,000 per year are eligible for subsidy. Meals billed to a third-party organization are not eligible for subsidy. If a client’s meals are being paid for by a family member and the family member’s yearly household income falls within the first three levels of the sliding scale, they may also qualify for meal subsidy.
| Household Income | Price Per Meal |
|---|---|
| $50,001+ or 3rd Party Organization | $15 |
| $40,001 – $50,000 | $12 |
| $25,001 – $40,000 | $9 |
| At or below $25,000 | $7 |
Clients interested in applying to the Meals on Wheels program must submit a copy of their CRA Income Tax Notice of Assessment Form to the New Dawn Meals on Wheels office.
New Dawn Meals on Wheels will use line 150 from the Tax Assessment Form to determine the client’s level on the sliding scale.
We rely on dedicated volunteers to deliver meals. Our volunteers are the heart of the organization!
We're always in need of new volunteers! We will provide you with the training and tools you need to make a difference in the lives of seniors and vulnerable people living in our community. Volunteering with New Dawn Meals on Wheels is also a great opportunity to socialize and meet new people.
Delivering for Meals on Wheels takes just 1–2 hours per week! Prefer to help in the kitchen? A volunteer shift is only 3 hours.
We’re a charitable organization that relies on donations to get hot, healthy food to seniors and others in our community who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Today in the CBRM, 20% of seniors over 65 live in poverty. This is higher than both the provincial and national rates and puts seniors in our community at increased risk for chronic food insecurity. Each year, we deliver 20,000 meals to those in need, enabling more people to live well and longer in their homes. With your help, we can do more
"I've worked with a lot of development corporations and companies and communities, and New Dawn is a rock in our community. I love that its the oldest community development corporation and, in my opinion, one of the most successful and sustainable in the country. I’ve always been very proud of my relationship with New Dawn."
—Annette Verschuren and Stan Shibinsky,
